Title: Centenary Camps
Description: What will your group be doing??
millsy_l - April 28, 2007 04:55 PM (GMT)
With the Centenary Camps now less than a month away, how are the preparations going?
Fife Area is planning a camp with all the different Districts attending.
We will be camping just outside of Anstruther (wonder if a trip to the Fish & Chip shop will be possible).
This is probably the largest camp that most of the Beavers/Cubs/Scouts in my group will attend, and I intend to make sure that they enjoy it.

Our District is running sectional centnary camps, I am involved with the planning of the Scout one, which of course we are well underway planning...

Yes as always seems to be the "little things" you leave until last like menu's and how you are going to get all the stuff to camp.
Here's hoping we all have wonderful sunny weather!
Eyeball - April 29, 2007 09:44 PM (GMT)
we are away on a diff dist event this coming weekedn...we will do the rest of the planning there i think.

The County have organised a joint cub/scout/explorer camp over the bank holiday weekend, with beavers doing a sleepover in a nearby hall and doing day visits to the camp site. There are planned to be many activities...I know my group are putting on 4 activities.
Should be a fun weekend, cant wait!

My group is doing our centenary camp at our local county campsite. Its going to be a good one.
Smiler - May 24, 2007 06:23 PM (GMT)
We had a district centenary camp over the bank holiday at the start of May. Had it at our local scout activity centre. It was a good weekend. Had some beavers sleepover in the hall at the site and beavers do a day visit, then we had loads of cubs, scouts and some explorers there.
Hope everyones camp goes well.

Well off on the Centenary Camp tonight. Roughly 2000 people from the whole of Fife Area camping, with the Beavers due to visit on the Saturday afternoon.
Went to put the tents up last night, as was just a tiny little bit windy, ended up taking us about 7 hours to put up 15 tents!!
Will let you know how it goes.

Will the tents still be there when you go to set up camp?
Haven't pitched a tent for over 6 years so it will be interesting as for some reason i seem to have been nominated to babysit the cubs and scouts on the friday night, when the beavers will be arriving on the saturday so I might get a bed the 2nd night as I am a beaver leader and we don't do camping in tents!! I know that most of the female adults in the group have already earmarked their dormatory so perhaps I might drop the hint that Id prefer a bed on both nights!
Our GSL never seems to sleep on camps - he goes home normally - we might try and force him into staying both nights.

Sometimes I wish our GSL would go home to sleep. The amount of noise he makes snoring! You dont want to pitch your tent next to his, otherwise youll be awake all night!

At the sleepover we did a few weeks ago we had a parent helper sharing a dorm with me, he said he didn't snore, but HE DID!
On the group centenary camp I will make sure my tent is pitched as far away from the cubs and scouts as kids and camping and torches don't go well together. Had to snatch quite a few torches from beavers during the sleepover and get them to put their torch back into their bag.

If we get more beavers attending the sleepover this time, along with the other sections, both big dorms may be taken due to numbers, there may be a need for my Assistant Beaver Leader to sleep in a tent in the hall, as there are a few female helpers going - that way, he will be up when the first beaver wakes up on the Sunday morning!!! Our GSL tends to go home, as he doesn't want leaders to think he is looking over their shoulders watching them - also, there are sometimes other reasons, ie, due to churchparade, etc.
Beaver Leaders have the option to go on the Fri night and stay for both nights or just stay for the Saturday night (sleepover night) - we would be there only to help out (if req) as the other sections have their own leaders to look after them. Personally, I will be helping in the kitchen, in readiness for the Beavers arriving on the Saturday.

I assumed that the tent would be outside, but I don't really mind.

Well back from Centenary camp, and to match with another topic about hours of sleep, since 9am on friday I have had about 5 hours sleep.
Tent putting up was a nightmare, field just a little bit windy and some of our canvas could have ended up in the North Sea.
Glad to be back home in civilisation and no more portable toilets!!

Portaloos on camp! Were you at a green field site then?
millsy_l - May 30, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
Yes we were on a greenfield. Not been on a camp on a greenfield site for a few years now so it was an experience.
Had to be a pretty big place to fit in 2,000 people
Eyeball - June 2, 2007 09:26 AM (GMT)
Sounds like you had fun. My troop were camping this last week, gusts of 70mph and steady 40mph winds....we were one of the few troops in the field who sat it out and didn't abandon.
We had some casualties, couple dining shelters, first aid tent (ironic) but other than that only minor damage. Was glad I took my big tent, it is very sturdy!! :)

Ah, the pleasures of being a beaver leader - it it gets too windy, or rainy we take them indoors and do activities inside.

I was dry...my tent is nice and stable! :)

We may be dry, but you don't get all the crying, tying shoelaces, etc. that you get with beavers.

But with cubs you get the odd 1 or 2 been sick in the tent, such as I had at the weekend! Thats a lot worse than crying beavers or tying shoe laces up!

You get that with beavers - we had 2 who felt sick when it was time to go to bed - don't know how close they were as I didn't deal with it personally.
Smiler - June 7, 2007 05:34 PM (GMT)
Well we had 4 sick in one night at camp last weekend. 3 of them inside a tent and one outside. Not the most pleasent job cleaning the sick up!
