Smiler - May 15, 2007 10:34 AM (GMT)
Did anyone see Ian Hislops Scouting for Boys programme on BBC4 last night. if you did what did you think of it?
Keith - May 15, 2007 01:21 PM (GMT)
I recorded it, but haven't had time to watch it - im attempting to catch up on my sleep.
Dani - May 15, 2007 07:49 PM (GMT)
i saw it.
didn't really say much about modern scouting though.
and i got distracted by counting the number of times ian hislop changed the way he wore his red scarf.
and didn't really like the dramatisations of what the scouts did with b-p, they were just a bit odd, and couldn't roll their scarves properly.

How many young people know how to roll their scarves properly. How ever many times you show them its still a mess when they try and roll it!

With beavers, us leaders end up rolling neckers up properly on nights that we let them take them off. I seem to spend half my time before we do the closing ceremony going round streightening neckers for beavers.
I used to struggle to roll mine up neatly as a scout - we had a necker with a border round the two shortest sides so getting it to look nice was hard. Now, im in a different group with a necker that had one colour on the left and one on the right - its got a nice seem down the middle so I just roll it down that and it always comes out neet.
Theres a way where you roll it up really tightly (need two people to do it) and then you sort of flick it with your hand and it should work, but thats never worked for me.

I just fold mine up and press it really well with an iron, then it sort of forms in it's folded shape as long as you don't unroll it too much, that way even if I do unroll it, I can roll it back really easily because it sort of remembers it!
I liked the program-but it featured the past without comparing it to the present enough!

Not Impressed. <_<

I only saw the last 20 minutes of the programme but don't think it focused much on modern day scouting, which is the image we want to project to all of those not involved in Scouting.
If more modern Scouting was shown it might have persuaded some people to give it a try! Especially in out Centenary year.

As you see this programme didn't fit in too well.

The only support I will give to the progarmme is:
Historically it was very informative and interesting, as well as being accurate. The programme was infact about scouting's history, to tie in with the Edwardian season on BBC, and not about modern scouting/the centenary!
millsy_l - May 21, 2007 03:01 PM (GMT)
How do you think it compared to the one shown on BBC2 earlier in the year with Neil Morrisey??

It was more informative about history, but appart from that there was only a minute or so showing anything modern - when Ian Hislop was talking to those explorers and scouts about first aid, etc.

I saw this on BBC 2 tonight and I must say I wasn't impressed with it. What got my back up was the way they pronounced B-Ps name. When will they ever learn that B-P was emphatic on the way to prounce the second part of his name.
For Baden, make it Maiden. For Powell rhyme it with Noel or words to that effect.
Regards,
Anthony

The simple way to remember how to fold a scarf, for Scouts, is to remind them that there should be seven folds. Each fold represents one of the Scout Laws. This should act as an memory aid for them!!

To be honest, I just lay mine down on a flat surface and roll it down the central seem on my necker. Its new to me about the 7 folds, does it apply for beavers and cubs as beavers have no law and cubs have a different law?
