Title: Hours of sleep
Description: How many hours do you manage to get ...
Keith - May 15, 2007 01:24 PM (GMT)
At the weekend we had a beaver sleepover - it was great fun, but as usual, i got hardly any sleep! Only 5 hours.
Im not a morning person so getting up at 6am on a sunday was a first for me.
When you're on camp how much sleep do you get?
Minimo - May 15, 2007 01:48 PM (GMT)
Usually 2-3 hours ast night as i tend to be the last to go to bed after clearing up and first up in the morning to put the hot water on etc and get myself sorted before the YP get up. then whilst they are off doing activities i usualy get about another 3 hours sometime during the day.

yup.
sounds more like it
we had our district centenary camp over the mayday bank holiday, and the most sleep i got in one night was about 5 hours. andover 3 nights it totalled about 14.
needless to say that i went to bed at 8 on the day we got home.

At camp Im always the last to go to bed and the first to get up for some reason?
The last camp I did was our district centenary camp at the start of May. The first night I got about 4 hours sleep in total, the next night was bout 4 as well. The final night I got 5 I think. So 13 hours in 3 days. I was well tied at the end.
Minimo I never have time during the day to sleep, as Im usually the one taking the young people of to the activities.
I think the least amount of sleep I got one night was at our county cub camp last year. On the first night I got about 90mins sleep. As our young people were awake most of the night and when they finally got to sleep the group next to us were up and making noise at 4am! I was not happy.

I am very lucky in the fact that we have different leadrs taking on different roles. we always have at least 6 leaders on camp so i we all do diffeernet things. i tend to deal with the moning activities and night activities(night hikes etc) another leader tends to deal withthe cooking etc.. another will organise the afternoon activities etc.. so we all get breaks! mine just happen to be in the afternoon so i use the time to catch up on a bit of sleep. also because we are a special needs group we also have a few kids who tend to tyry to "run away".there for me and a nother leader tend to take it in turns to be on night patrol. however if he is not avaliable fo camp i do all night so sometimes get no sleep at all! therefore its quite easy to get used to sleeping in the afternoon with all the YP screaming! :)

I agree sleep on a camp!! What are the chances!
Always sleep better on the second night of camps as they are that tired from not sleeping the night before.

I was at a beaver sleepover last weekend, I went to bed just after midnight, could not get to sleep due to my helpers and other leaders talking, joking & laughing. That went on until 3.30am, then I was up and dressed at 5am, incase the beavers got up early. They got up around 6am, so I made sure my other leaders and helpers were up too! After 7 days, I have just caught up on my sleep! It was a brilliant weekend and I would certainly do it again, as I gained my permit after being assessed last weekend. :)

I couldn't remember how long it went on for - felt like ages. Was still awake when they finally went to bed.

The secret of a peaceful Beaver sleepover is to wear them out. Take them out for a long walk the first evening and keep them up doing things to about 10pm.
We had to wake some of our Beavers up at 8 on the last sleepover we ran.

We had them wanting to go for a sleep at 1pm, and we had only started at 11am.

We had them tossing pancakes around the campsite (tennis rackets and out of date flat breads.)

Sleeping on the first night just never happens, maybe the second night I get a few hours but thats about it. But I have lots of fun so its all worth it

As the "Catering Manager" for the Scout Troops summer camps, I am often up late into the night preparing for the following days cooking. This often means that I have to get up before the Scouts to get everything ready for them. Therefore sleep is at a premium.
With regard to getting the boys to sleep on the first night try this :
- pick Scouts up at 18:30
- dry slope skiing from 19:30 - 21:00
- back in vans 21:15
- drop boys of about 2 - 3 miles from camp, they then have a night hike of about an hour before arriving at camp at about 00:00 hrs
- supper, then to bed. Before going to sleep remind them that they have to go to slep because the next day the activities start at 08:00 and finish at 00:00 the following night.
Works every time!! The boys do sleep the first night or miss out on activities the next day. As these include sailing, canoeing, sub-aqua diving, parascending jet biking, they are only to keen to sleep!!

Just had our beaver sleepover last night. We managed to have all the beavers asleep by 11.30pm, with the first ones getting up at about 6am. I managed to get about 5 hours sleep I think which is more than I thought!
It was the 1st beaver sleepover I've done and I'd certainly help do another one again.
Keith - June 10, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
I know that we have 2 in the early planning stage for next year so should be fun.
