At the moment in yualbury scout camp (nr oxford) you are not alowed to burn wood of palets because of the coating on them so at the moment they are useing logs. this makes the camp less fun and the wood pile doesn't look impresive. Is this a good thing that there not burning palets

If they are not allowing people to burn them why did they get them in the first place!
We use some pallet wood if it's there, but mostly use proper wood as it's just better (and often easier too as breaking up pallets is hard work)

Hi there.
I'm on service crew at a distric campsite, and we used to take delivery of pallet wood, but because of the hoo-ha at youlbury, we've stopped for 2 reasons:
1st is that the envoroment agancy is worried that the pallets maybe treated with some kind of creosote and so burning them is releasing nasty chemicals into the air.
2nd is that if its a company delivering them it counts as waste, and (for reasons i can't remember) thats a problem too.
Hope that helps.
:)

Pallets also have nails in...painful to step on, and that's why our local campsite doesn't use them.

We still often use pallets as a wood fuel, although not ideal it is readily available and free, it is very rare to have treated or painted wood, these are usually recycled. To avoid the issue of disposal of industrial waste we purchase the pallets at the cost of 1p each.
