Title: what's the difference between uk and italy scout?
rinoceronte caparbio - May 5, 2008 11:39 PM (GMT)
Here in italy, in my association, AGESCI (in italy there is maybe 40 scout association, another stupid things here), we have a different "division" of the age of scouts
In italy we have a different age of distinction:
the "our" cub scouts are from 7-8 years old to approximately 11 years old, and we call them "lupetti", sounds like "little wolf" for young boys and for young girls.
After, they go to the scouts (called "reparto", sounds like "unit") , from 11 years old to approximately 16 years old.
Then they go up to the "clan", a company of "rovers" (boys) and "scolte" (girls), where they remain (sure, if they want), till they choose - at 21 or 22 years old - to take the "partenza" (sounds like "start").
When they took this, they promise that the whole of them life is voted to the service volontary, in scouting (like a scoutmaster, if i understand what is this) or in other type of association.
If they won't take this, they simply exit the "clan", and the road od scouting, for them, is finish. But they are whatever scouts...
here in uk?
PS: since i not better understanding english, mod please move this topic to a better section...

In the uk our structure is as follows:
6 - 8 year olds are in the beaver section and they play games, make things and go on outings.
8 - 10 years old are cubs and they do basic scout skills, play games, make things, etc. Unlike beavers, cubs can camp in tents.
Scouts are 10 - 14 year old and they do alot more scouting skills and adventurous activities like hiking, climbing, canoening, etc.
14 - 18 year olds go to explorers and do the same things as the scouts, but more advanced. Some also work with one of the younger sections as a 'young leader'.
18 - 25 is network that consists of all leaders under 25 and they do have activities arranged on an opt in basis.
25+ is the fellowship, thats all leaders over 25.

It means that if a leader wants to take part in network activities, they can, but if they don't want to they aren't expected to do anything.

ah, ok, i understand now!
And, what about the BP's "second class scout"?
I explain...
In BP 's "Scouting for Boys", he's wrote that the step after the Promise is conquer the "second class symbol (? is correct?)" and after the "firts class", so i became a First Class Scout (sorry for my very bad english..)
Is still therefore?
In italy (better, in agesci - www.agesci.org - ), we have already changed the sistem (that is changed to BP's "model" long time ago, i think in the 80es).
After the entrance in "reparto" (your "scout"), and after the scout promise that is different from the cub's promise, the boy is encourage to take the "tappa" (sounds like "step") of "scoperta" ("discovery"), the step of "competence" and finally the "responsability".
You still have the BP's class?
Thank however keith!

Im not sure about first class and second class to be honest as I have never read Scouting for Boys. I did watch a television programme during our centenary about it though.
Ill try and find out and get back to you.

I have got an answer for you. Before a boy was invested as a scout they had to complete your 'tenderfoot' (thats what it was called). Once invested you complete your first class and second class. These are questions or tasks that are completed, most of the answers were in scouting for boys.

Hi Keith
as an hold Epping Forest Elf(3 beedies) and (now) in Italian Scouts ,same as Rino ...AGESCI ,that is the biggest association in Italy,
Associazione Guide e Scout Cattolici Italiani
Italian Catholic Scout & Guides Association,
I can help you through this process of knowing each other.
The Italian Reparto or Riparto corresponds to our Troop.
About B.-P. and our method Tenderfoot,Second Class & First Class,
some time ago...when I was a a little bit younger, that means going back 30 years ...or even something more....not cheating...just memory going...
It was :Link Badge(Cub award at the time),Scout Standard , Advanced Scout Standard & Chief's Scouts Award
equalled Tender,2nd & 1st.
Now it is :
(Almost) Moving on Award(Cub)+Scout Membership Award(Troop),Outdoor Challenge & Outdoor Challenge Plus...plus part of the other awards.
Infact the Method in his main structure hasn't changed a lot if not for names ,how awards have been divided and some "timings" in obtaining them.
The main changes in British Scouting took place in '66 with "The Parity act" that's were we lost:The "Boy" and became only Scouts, the Wolf from the Wolf Cubs, the shorts, the Lemon Squeezer(for the beret) and a lot of the "classical" names of the Traditional Scouting Method....and then in the 90 where,by my point of view, there was the definitive "cut" with Scouting as for the origins.
By the way ....Rino...your English is quite good....astonished...
Was forgetting....Lupetti translated is simply........Cubs.
