i'm 22, and have been an explorer leader for 2 years (come december).I used to be an SPL a few years back with another group. But after leaving for a few years i came back to scouting. To my horror lately ive found scouts being LAZY!
For example; This weekend myself and the other explorer leader were asked to attend a multi district camp. whilst there we observed something which is a very common trend. The scouts are sitting on their arses with their hands in their pockets. WHY? i know this isnt something which happens in every scout group, BUT, how much are YOU doing for your scout group? is any leader cooking an meal for the scouts? is any leader washing any of the scouts utensils?
Its not just restricted to scouts its explorers aswel. myself i wish to see more kids camping under CANVAS on patrol camps. being inspected properly. The trouble is, we molly-coddle the kids too much..
'The more responsibility the Scoutmaster gives his patrol leaders, the more they will respond' - Baden Powell
“When you want a thing done, 'Don't do it yourself' is a good motto for Scoutmasters" - Baden Powell
Kids will never change, theyre looking for someone to help them grow up. Give them the challenge of looking after themselves and they will do their best to step up to the challenge.
Whats your thoughts?
I must agree with what you are saying, you do see Scouts sitting about doing nothing.
What I really get annoyed with is when they sit aroung moaning that they are bored and then the minute you ask them to do something suddenly they are not anymore.
You have to feel that some of the problems come from kids having so many things at home like computers and mobile phones etc that when they come to camp they think there is nothing for them to do. They don't know what it is like to not have much.
Get them on a back to basics camp they shall soon learn what it is involved!!
