Title: Nights Away
Description: Badges for more than 50 nights?
Kastor - November 28, 2005 11:16 PM (GMT)
Gilwell is asking for comment on wether there should be recognition of Nights Away of more than 50.
Do you think there should be a 100 nights or even a 250 nights badge? Have any of you done that many?
Horus Kol - November 29, 2005 07:39 AM (GMT)
yes... definitely....
i have a number of Explorers who have probably achieved 400 nights away since they joined as Beavers...

Other Scout Associations have a 100 nights badge.
I suppose though once you're past 100 does it really matter? Maybe you should move on to something else like the Explorer Belt and more challenging things. I think the Welsh SA are running a "camp in every month of the year" scheme.

In the high wycombe district they have a 100, 150 and 200 nights away badges, and then specail awards for people with more

If you go through all the sections and do 3 camps a year in scouts and explorers, you would get near 100, so I think we need higher ones for those Camp-o-holics out there!

We have a few that, since the start of Scouts through to first year or Explorers are upto about 150...any they are constantly doing more...with Troop, Group and District/County camps we attend on average 5/6 a year, some 2 nights some 7 some more....we need the higher badges....

This year, the Explorers have had the chance to rack up about 30 nights each (including a joint summer camp with some Scout Troops from the district).

no one in our group is near 50 nights away. the scouts only go on a summer camp for a week each year and have the odd sleep over, they say there two busy. Im waiting to get my nights away permit then the cubs will be having even more camps than from before.
at the moment theres only a couple of people in our group with a permit and one of them isent that popular so you dont get much help if hes going to be there!!

The Welsh Scout Council have, for the last four-five years or so, run The Dragon Award. This has got three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold (duh!)
The idea is that you spent one night under canvas per calendar month. For Bronze it's that simple. For Silver and Gold, there are extra 'challenges' to add a bit of an interesting twist!
Although it's run by the Welsh Scout Council, it's open to all from Scout age right up until the day you drop! (Though hopefully you don't drop whilst on The Dragon Award)

There used to be a scheme called the Zodiac Award. I don't know if it is still in existence or if it was just limited to Scotland? It sounds similar to what they run in Wales as there is Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. Not sure what needs to be done to achieve them though
