 Norjam 2010,Gilwell and London...

Suddenly all the concerns about the 'Out in Scouting' seem to be put aside and it's difficult to go anywhere in London particularly without seeing, and sometimes actually meeting some real live Scouts.

Meeting with some friends for a few drinks and some supper on the South Bank the other day we ended up sharing a table with some Scouts from 'South America'.

I think they rather liked the idea of the BBQ on the roof......!?

John Lewis in Oxford Street has no problems with 'Scouts in Uniform' unlike another well known Department Store.

Infact they seemed to be having a great time watching 3D TV and trying all sorts of 'Electronic State of the Art Equipment'.

The Overground Train from Chingford Station to Liverpool Street has quite a smattering of assorted 'Scouts' on their way too and from Gilwell Park.

And those that get off at Walthamstow Central to continue their journey into the West End rather than the City are excited by the revalation of each new and undiscovered underground Station that they pass through.

London is such an exciting place and every day it fills to overflowing with people who are feeling that excitment for the first time.

Those of us who are lucky enough to have the experience almost on a daily basis
never tire of the feeling of having everything so close at hand.

We have started our own Scout Heritage Group and we meet every so often to share our expertise

Our last visit was to the Imperial War Museum to trace the story of 'Jack Cornwell' who is an important figure in the early History of the 'Scouting Movement'.

We had such a great time discussing his life and sadly his early death.

Norjam was just Buzzing with Scouts exploring the site and trying a range of new activites

Having somewhere that is safe and well appointed is what is important about these large Scout Events.

Just as having the feeling that London is a real place of exploration and experience.

 'School Holidays.....'
Posted by Dr.Stu.. - 07-30-10 15:41 - 0 comments
At the very time when 'Scouting used to come into it's Own'........

It follows the model of the 'Schools' and says that everybody is away..........

'And Closes Down..........'

It was of course in the 'School Holidays' in 1908/09 that Scouting became established.

The idea of the 'Summer Camp' was of course the 'Big Event' for this period of the year.

Again this key 'Scouting Event' is missing from so many ' Scout Programmes '.....!?

'Too Exspensive'

'All the Cubs and Scouts have gone away with their Parents'

'Everybody needs a break'

Well as the A&E departments fill up with Adolescents suffering from a range of assaults and woundings.

The Police are called out to a greater number of cases of 'Anti Social Behaviour'.

'The Government wants to start a Programme in 2011 for 'Adolescents' leaving School that looks very much like 'Explorer Scouts' to me.

Does the Government have to reinvent 'Scouts' as part of it's Programme for 'Young People'....!?

Not to Worry it's happening in the Holidays when of course there isn't any 'Scouts'......!?

 'Gilwell 24'
Posted by Dr.Stu.. - 07-13-10 19:59 - 0 comments
In 1902 when G Stanley Hall published his important two Volume Work on 'Adolescence' he must have had the notion of 'Explorer Scouts' and the idea of holding an event like 'Gilwell 24'.

It is certainly true that BP gathered much of his thinking for the 'Boy Scouts' from Hall and the other co-inventors of Adolescents.

The importance of 'Senior Scouting' which has become 'Explorer Scouts' is certainly the fastest growing Section in the whole Movement.

As a place where 'Adolescents' can 'hang out' Gilwell is ideal.

It has all the elements of a 'small town' a town square with a central point a clock tower and some shops.

The Great Thing about Gilwell 24 was that 'Groups of Adolescents' could hang around all night without there being any feeling of fear or menace.

The Explorer Units are also excellent places to sample relationships between boys and girls and boys and boys and girls and girls.

As there is a 'Scout Camp' ethos there was no concern about dressing in a particular way of having to change clothes or even to have showers.

Thus the relaxation of these critical norms of behaviour allowed a far greater freedom and lessening of anxiety and stress found so often in adolescent gatherings.

There were a number of 'Rituals' to do with 'hugging' and displays of physical contact that are more often seen by Anthropologists as part of 'Adolescent Behaviour' perhaps as far away as PNG.

 "Mummy,Mummy,Mummy,Mummy,Mummy,Mummy"
Posted by Dr.Stu.. - 06-28-10 16:06 - 0 comments
Just the most difficult time when School closes it's doors and there is nowhere for the boys that have left to hide anymore.

Although the 'Mummies' 'Scream and Shout' there is nothing to help them in their plight about their 'Sons Growing Up.'

Or rather just getting older..

Growing Up is something the Mummies never really thought would happen to their 'little Boy'.

'If their 'Little Boys' start to 'Get Older' then there must be Something very wrong !?

Perhaps it's a 'Mystery Virus' that only their Son has contracted.....!?

Or Perhaps it's something far worse ??

Whatever it is it dosn't need some Stupid Psychiatrist suggesting that their Tom,Sam or James is Depressed or suffering from an Anxiety State........!?

Who Does He Think He Is.....................!?

Do I Get Killed in the End ?

It should be interesting seeing Myself Playing at being a Psychiatrist;Being a Psychiatrist....

If you see what I mean !?

 'Scout Day in Carlisle Tomorrow'
Posted by Dr.Stu.. - 06-18-10 22:11 - 0 comments
Up early to get the Train and Underground to catch the 7:30am Train From Euston to Carlisle.

For the 'All Singing,All Dancing' Carlisle Scouting Extravaganza'.

I Sometimes manage to take a few rays of sunshine with me,although I was in St Ives today and the weather was hot/warm/cold/rainy and Windy.

It would be great if this was a traveling 'Road Show' and the 'Scouting Gospel' could be 'Hiked' around a few more Towns and Cities in the UK.

Back in Gilwell it's another Happening Week-End.

I must take a look in on Sunday just to make sure they haven't left anybody behind.

I think that I might have just managed to convince a few of the 'enlightened' in Scouting that it might be a 'good idea' to have a bit of [some] knowledge of some 'Medical and Psychiatric Conditions' that are found with Children and Adolescents.

There is such a resistance in some of the 'Adult Leaders' due in part to their own anxieties about their own 'Mental Health'.

Are they to be 'found out' ?

I think they say more about 'Themselves' when they talk about 'Labeling' and 'Punishment' and 'Not Being Made To Look Stupid' and of 'Not Being Child Psychologists' !?

I don't quite understand what the trouble is when there are so many in 'Scouting' who love to play at being 'Doctors & Nurses' without any real knowledge of what they are doing !?

The expectation that particularly YL's should have so some intrinsic knowledge of how to deal with complex personality and behavioural conditions with the help of a few 'handouts' or a few 'fact sheets' is not a reasonable expectation in my view.

The claim that we 'don't have kids in our Group/Troop/Pack/Colony etc etc with those 'sorts of problems' says more about the fact that some 'Scouts' are more 'Inclusive' than others.

I am quite happy to travel to speak with 'Groups,Troops,Leaders etc anywhere as I think the matter is that urgent and important.

 'It's Votes that Count.......Not Children !?'
Posted by Dr.Stu.. - 06-14-10 16:03 - 0 comments
At one time [pre Election] Children and Young People were at the 'Every Child Matters' Stage in their Developmental Process.

This was 'Pre Election'.

Now as the 'Money Runs Out'

They have moved from 'Centre Stage' ...... "in fact they have fallen off the Stage and landed into not 'The Pit' but into 'A Pit'.

This is at a time when the number Children with 'Autism','Developmental Disorders','Mental Health' and 'Personality Disorders' is at it's highest.

For those involved in Scouting there are some stark warnings on the card.

Firstly if there is no help and support for Leaders each Child who 'plays up' or is identified as 'naughty' will be removed from the 'Pack','Troop' or 'Group'.

This action takes no account of the 'Needs of the Child' remember 'Not Every Child Matters Anymore'.

A Child might well have a list of 'Psychopathologies' after His/Her Name.

This Counts for little in the new 'Scrapped for Cash' World where only 'The Good Children' get anything 'Good' that is going.

It's no accident that 87% of 'Young People' in our Prisons have 'Mental Health' problems.

Scouts have always stopped the numbers from growing in the way that they 'Included' those with 'Psychopathologies'.

If 'Scouters' continue to feel unsupported they will be less inclinded to include those who might be experienced as 'Difficult' or 'Unworthy' of the 'Scouters Time'.

Many Scouters say that are not 'Teachers',Social Workers,Psychologists etc......

No they are not for the importance is in relationships that they they build up with the 'Young People' which is the lasting part of the 'Scouting Experience'.

 'Lights;More Lights;No Much Action'
Posted by Dr.Stu.. - 06-2-10 10:36 - 0 comments
Well it was very early in the morning when the car picked me up so I had just about enough time to try and remember my lines.........that's what they [the film people] wanted me to say......

Not what I said when it came to the actual filming as most of the day had been and passed by then.

The art of filming is cetainly about hanging about.

My bit a conversation with a young potential Muslim Bomber was filmed over several hours when continuity placed me in several different situations and equipment was moved and more lights were added.

I must confess that I found it quite difficult to be animated in my performance as I had been sitting about for too long.

By 8:30pm I had little interest in the boy and his plans to blow up himself and anybody who got in his way.

Suddenly everything stopped and I was driven back to the Station to return home.

There is another day of filming in a couple of weeks time........

" I can hardly wait.......!!?? "

'Whats Wrong With Him Again ?'
Posted by Dr.Stu.. - 05-30-10 23:15 - 1 comments
For many Adolescents the state of Adolescence is just too much to bear.

If only it came at a more settled time in their lives.......Whenever that is supposed to be ?

Symptoms there are in plenty each pointing to an unrelated Condition.....or that's what I say...

The parents are just at their 'wits end' ...all their friends who have kids all say this it the worst case they have seen !?

'But what is it ?'

Should he be at home tucked up in bed.......?

No because he has exams which he needs to take.

'How are things at the Explorers ?'

'Fine ! '

'What are you doing; have you planned anything ?'

We are going to help at a District Camp in 'Devon' or is it 'Yorkshire'.....?

'And you are looking forward to this then ?'

[no answer]

'So you are looking forward to this then with your mates, are you ?'

[no answer]

'Your mum said she thought you were worried ?'

'No why should I be '

'Your mum said that you had had some form of fit......that you had been having night sweats......waking in the night calling out that's all ?'

[no it's not true]

'You seem quite depressed to me not like I had seen you in the past...is that right Ben ?'

[no it's not true]

May 2010.[London]

'The Private had left his Post and was found wandering in 'no mans land' he was taken back to his Company'.

'The Medical Officer said the man trembled and called out. he sweated and seemed as if he would burst into tears at any moment'

'When asked the man could not account for his behaviour or subsequent actions ?'

'It seemed if all the spirit had been taken from the man although those that knew him said he was known as a jolly young fellow'.

He was to be shot for desertion.

 ' Brittle Boy Syndrome '
Posted by Dr.Stu.. - 05-11-10 11:02 - 0 comments
Quite a lot of the 'Boys' that I see at the Clinic would be included in this Group.

There is always a 'presenting picture' that will have elements of emotional and psychological damage to the boy by the boys father.

Although the boys father is no longer at home the boy still carries all the hurt and upset from the time that the family was breaking up.

Part of the process of putting 'these boys' together again is allowing them to express their anger and frustration at having been abused in the way they have by their own fathers.

Scouts are very good at including these 'boys' and having a way of 'healing' some of this hurt.

The Leaders in Scouts and particularly in Explorer Scouts can share in the important process of 'psychic healing'.

Not just a matter of 'Role Models' it's far more organic in that it heals the boys souls and allows the transition into adulthood.
